Abstract
Every metal cutting process is associated with the combination of indentation processes. Thus, studying indentation has a great importance in mechanics of metal cutting process. The present work deals with the indentation of a conical diamond point indenter to a semiinfinite block of mild steel. In indentation process, some portion of the block is plastically deformed. The present work investigates zone of extensions of plastic zone for different types of indenters having varying cone angles through finite element analysis and compare the results with Slip-line field approaches. The present work considers semi-apex angle of the cone to be greater than 45°.
