Abstract

In this paper, we present a novel compact hardware platform based on a microcontroller unit dedicated to evaluation and development of power analysis side-channel attacks and countermeasures against them. The platform is demonstrated by performing a correlation power analysis attack on a multi-precision multiplication which is part of various cryptographic protocols such as an elliptic curve digital signature algorithm. Firstly, we introduce the platform - its main features, advantages and usage. Afterwards, a measurement setup and methods of the attack is described. Then, we briefly describe various implementations of the multi-precision multiplication and their properties in terms of the attack. Finally, the main results of the attack on the novel platform are shown, with a discussion about new aspects in protecting the multi-precision multiplication implementations.
