Abstract

Philosophy is a discipline offering several models of communication as a theoretical base for empirical research. This essay is an introductory explication of the major divisions of philosophy (metatphysics, epistemology, logic, axiology) as illustrated in the models currently used in the philosophy of communication: Existential Phenomenology, Semiology, Conceptual Analysis, and Critical Theory. Each model represents a unique formulation of the communication theory constructs: intention, punctuation, convention, and legitimation. These theory based constructs may be viewed as a set of theorems in the theory construction process with respect to communication research, whether qualitative or quantitative.
