Abstract

The development of Chinese cinema's commercial entertainment trend from the mid to late 1990s was both the result and the manifestation of the Chinese film industry's shifting economic and cultural orientations. The marketization and decentralization of the film industry directly contributed to the surge of entertainment pictures. The ongoing economic reform was accompanied by the rise of popular culture led by Hollywood imports, which further opened the floodgates to Chinese cinema's commercial entertainment wave. Major cinematic trends during the period are addressed. Such trends directly responded to the industry's marketization agenda.
