Abstract
The hydrodynamic equations for multiphase flow have been extended by including a local particle population balance to the standard equations of change. The approach has been illustrated by numerically solving a combustion problem in which a polydispersed solid is consumed. A simplified particle distribution containing only three particle size classes is used. The combustion kinetics are also simplified to a pressure-dependent surface regression mechanism. As a result of these simplifications, results are similar to those obtained for the single size class analysis. It is anticipated that the use of a Arrhenius reaction rate for the solid decomposition mechanism would yield different results.
