Abstract

ABSTRACT Preoperative imaging is a critical part of the multimodality treatment of colon and rectal cancer. Surgeons approach this imaging with a need to know critical details. With colon cancer, the predominant imaging modality is CT scan. CT provides information about local environment of the tumor, the global abdomen, and extra abdominal sites. With rectal cancer, MRI is the standard of preoperative imaging. MRI's high-resolution images and multiplanar evaluation of the pelvis allows accurate assessment of depth of penetration, nodal status and involvement of other organs. Understanding of relationships between tumor and mesorectum is critical to projecting therapies.
