Abstract
High resolution ultrasound is a powerful diagnostic tool to evaluate the lower extremity peripheral nerves. It offers a complementary evaluation to MR neurography and has distinct advantages. Requests for ultrasound imaging of lower extremity nerves are becoming more commonplace as a first line evaluation of neurologic deficits given its accessibility, lower cost, and non-invasive approach. Radiologists can provide a higher value to their referring providers with a thorough understanding of lower extremity nerve anatomy and common pathologies. This article discusses the ultrasound appearance of lower extremity nerves with an anatomic approach as well as commonly seen pathologies.
