Abstract
Abstract ‘Superior’ potatoes were planted on May 5 in Sunderland, MA. The soil type was a fine sandy loam with a pH of ca 5.5. Dinoseb was applied at 2 lb ai/acre prior to plant emergence. Treatment blocks were replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. Each block consisted of two 30-ft rows with a 3-ft fallow area between each plot. Temik was applied directly to the seed furrow at planting with a Gandy applicator (Line Tender Model). Foliar treatments were applied with a 3-gal stainless-steel backpack sprayer and a CO2pressurized sprayer at ca 50 psi with a delivery rate of 65 gal/acre. Foliar spray applications were made on Jul 1, 8, 23 arrd 30, except for the biweekly applications of MK-936 0.03SL, which were made on Jul 1 and 23 only. On Jul 23, FMC 63429 was accidently applied to the FMC 54800 plots. Subsequently, FMC 63429 was applied at the new rates listed in the table below to the plots originally assigned to the FMC 54800 plots and FMC 54800 was applied at the 0.06 rate to the plots originally assigned to FMC 63429. Since this change in applications occurred between the 1st and 2nd generation of CPB, the resulting data should be comparable. Insect counts were analyzed using DMRT at the 5% level. Since, with few exceptions, all treatments were shown to be significantly different from the control, or, in the later counts, the control plots were 100% defoliated, the Duncan’s Test was applied to the insecticide treatments alone (without the control) to give a better indication of the relative effectiveness of the various insecticides.
