Abstract

Abstract Propylene glycol, glycerine, and triethylene glycol were extracted from 10.0 g tobacco by shaking 1 hr with methanol. All three polyols were determined simultaneously by GLC of the supernatant extract, using a 42 × 3/16″ column of 1 + 1 Diatoport S-Chromosorb 101 coated with 5% Carbowax 20M-terephthalic acid. The column temperature was programmed at 90−240°C; anethole was used as the internal standard. The method was studied collaboratively by 11 laboratories. Systematic errors have been reduced to acceptable levels except in samples containing very low or high concentrations of a given humectant.
