Abstract

Two questions are addressed through an examination of research on cohabitation and marriage: do couples cohabit as a form of marriage preparation? and does pre-marital cohabitation strengthen marriage? The results of research suggest that a strong, negative association exists between pre-marital cohabitation and marital stability, but it is noted that much of this research was carried out when cohabiting before marriage was relatively unconventional behaviour. There is some evidence that younger generations do not show the same strong link between pre-marital cohabitation and marriage dissolution and it is suggested that, as cohabitation becomes the majority pattern before marriage, this link will become progressively weaker.
