Abstract

Increases in the number of people premaritally cohabiting raise questions regarding the effect of premarital cohabitation on marriage. One question that has not been adequately addressed is the effect of premarital cohabitation on later marital stability. This effect is investigated with data from a probability sample of 10472 ever-married Canadians. Results suggest that premarital cohabitation has a positive effect on staying married. This positive effect remains when length of marriage and age at marriage are controlled. The difference between previous studies and the present study are discussed. (EXCERPT)
