Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinicopathological features and the effect of surgical treatment on pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma (PNEC).Methods The clinical data of 60 patients with PNEC treated from January 1998 to November 2011 at Changhai Hospital were retrospectively analyzed.The differences in survival rates and the duration of survival between the radical resection group and the palliative surgery group were compared with the log-rank test.Results Of 60 patients,50 received radical resection and 10 palliative surgery.The 5-year overall survival for the radical resection group was 51.5%.The overall survival at 3 years for the palliative surgery group was 10.0%.The median survival was 61 months for the radical resection group and 16 months for the palliative surgery group (P < 0.01).Conclusions Surgery is the first choice of treatment for PNEC.The survival of the radical resection group was significantly longer than that of the palliative surgery group.
