Abstract

publication in 1945 by Gilll prompted the application of preparations of hog intestine in the management of chronic ulcerative colitis. In his writing he states that The natural course of ulcerative colitis with its tendency to spontaneous remissions and relapses led us to consider that chronic ulcerative colitis might be a deficiency disease. suggestion came to him that the missing hypothetical factor might be present or produced by some part of the intestine. He continues to say that remissions and relapses could be induced according to whether treatment was maintained or discontinued. intestinal preparation that Gill used successfully was named Preparation B after the method of Allen and Hanburys; it was a simple desiccated defatted substance. In 1946 Gill2 substantiated his previous report on this form of therapy. Ehrlich3 reported favorable results in the treatment of ulcerative colitis with extracts of hog stomach in 1947. In 1948 Friedman4 reported favorably on this form of treatment with orally administered extract of hog intestine. In 19495 a preliminary report was presented by us on the use of duodenal substance in the treatment of chronic ulcerative colitis.
