Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyze the reasons for the dramatic increase of contracts in the Argentina winegrape industry. Our econometric tests, run on a database of winegrape contracts collected in Mendoza area, show two main results : (i) contracts are more efficient than vertical integration when both parties want to improve the quality of the winegrapes produced ; (ii) the price clause provides significant incentives to quality improvement.
