Abstract
Unique conditions in Hungary during the Nazi Occupation in 1944 enabled a singular rescue operation for Jewish children in Budapest to be undertaken. A small group of Zionists in Hungary, particularly members of the various Zionist Youth movements, analysed their position in the autumn of 1944 and took the initiative to find ways to safeguard Jews inside Hungary. This initiative, taken by a marginal group in Hungarian Jewish life and helped by neutral diplomats, significantly affected the fate of thousands of Jews in Budapest, especially children
