AbstractThe isochromans (III), prepared by cyclization of the arylethanols (I) with paraformaldehyde (II), and the isochromanones (X) and (XIII) are oxidized with ceric ammonium nitrate in methanol (IV) to produce regioselectively the methoxy derivatives (V), (VII), and (XIV), together with some other oxidation products as outlined in the reaction scheme.
