Abstract

AbstractDirect construction of the 2‐isoxazoline ring directly from an alkene, or from an alkene and primary nitroalkane, was achieved in the presence of ammonium cerium nitrates. It has been found that (1) a carboxylic acid such as formic acid is required to promote the reaction, (2) an appropriate additive is required, when ammonium cerium(IV) nitrate is employed, but the additive is not necessary when ammonium cerium(III) nitrate is employed, (3) both ammonium cerium nitrates are converted into cerium(III) formate before the reaction takes place, and, (4) the cerium ion acts as a carrier of NOx as well as the activator of the nitro compound, and nitrate anion is the source of the NOx as well as the promoter of the reaction. A plausible reaction scheme has been proposed.
