Abstract

Recently, the assay of free fatty acids (FFA) has become important in biochemical and clinical investigations. Although high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is widely used for this purpose, most of these methods involve the formation of derivatives having ultraviolet or fluorescent groups’*2. Fatty acids themselves generally do not show strong absorption in the ultraviolet region, so that direct detection is not suitable for trace analysis. In the clinical field, an enzymatic method has been used for the determination of total fatty acids in serum3v4 by spectrophotometry, using an acyl-CoA synthetase (ACS) and acyl-CoA oxidase (ACO) reaction system:
