Abstract

The degradation behavior of SiC-MgAl2O4 materials contacting with coal gasifying slag was studied via rotary kiln testing at 1500 °C, to assess the viability of this material type as chromia-free alternative for coal gasifier. A combined macroscopical and microstructural investigation on the tested material samples lead to a comprehensive understanding of the corrosion and penetration resistance to coal gasifying slag. SiC was oxidized by slag constitute and MgAl2O4 dissolved into the bulk slag. SiC-MgAl2O4 materials exhibited superior slag infiltration resistance and thermal shock resistance compared to Cr2O3-Al2O3-ZrO2 materials, which might lead to longer lifespans of gasifier lining.
