Abstract

With an aim to use ammonia as a direct fuel in gas turbines, an investigation on the degradation of materials used in the turbine components in the ammonia flow environment is important. The present work investigated the surface reaction and degradation of Inconel 600 placed at different positions inside a furnace in the direction of ammonia flow at 400 °C to 600 °C. Severe surface damage and degradation was identified. The effect of specimen position on the extent of degradation and the damage mechanisms were elucidated utilizing XRD, TEM, and Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES).
