Abstract

From the VIth and the VIIIth centuries Chelles has grown inside its three communities : the Villa or palace, the Abbey and the village. The combination of toponymie details, informations delivered by too few written documents : « Histoire des Francs » by Grégoire de Tours, «Vie de Saint Géry», «Vie de Sainte Bathilde», and finally archaeological research now under way, makes it possible to circumscribe the area on which the palace was erected and provides a lakely location for the monasteries which have succeeded each other in this area but unfortunately left no buildings. As for the village, nothing but its necropolis confirms its existence. These three communities have lived in a concomitant manner inside a topography which up to now remains partially unknown to us.
