Abstract
THOUGH sometimes disguised in the cloak of a Humanities course, some form of art history or art appreciation is well on its way to becoming a standard part of the general education, required of every degree-seeking undergraduate, in the United States. While some such program of required fine arts was apparently first envisioned by Thomas Jefferson,1 very little was accomplished prior to 1874, the year that Charles Eliot Norton first offered at Harvard his courses in what we now designate “art history.”
