Abstract

In ‘What is art history?’ the term ‘art history’ is discussed and the difference between art appreciation and art history established. The work of art is our primary evidence, and it is our interaction between this evidence and methods of enquiry that forms art history. Art appreciation and criticism are also linked to connoisseurship. How is connoisseurship related to taste? The view of art history as a ‘progression’ is analyzed and challenged. What are the differences between visual culture and popular culture? The social and cultural issues articulated by art history are examined through an analysis of four works of art.
