Abstract
Non-equilibrium charge-state distributions of fast 16O ions have been measured for a range of thin C and Al targets. The ion velocities were sufficiently high for the fully stripped and hydrogen-like ions to dominate the charge-state distribution. Cross-sections for the capture and loss of electrons were calculated from these data and compared to the values published for 16O ions traversing gas targets of similar nuclear charge. The difference between the cross-sections for the dilute gas targets and the solid ones is discussed in terms of models of the density effect in charge-exchange.
