Abstract
Independent and cumulative formation cross-sections in the fission of 238U by protons of energy 30–160 MeV have been determined for isotopes of antimony of A = 120–131. Charge-dispersion curves were constructed and these were corrected for the variation of N Z p as a function of A. The charge-dispersion curves showed an asymmetry when computer-fitted which disappeared when two overlapping Gaussians were used to fit the data. If these can be correctly interpreted by the two-mode fission hypothesis, the ratios of asymmetric to symmetric fission at 50 and 160 MeV would be 7·9 and 1·5 respectively.
