Abstract
This chapter describes the applications of brassinosteroids (BS). BS are considered for application in agriculture because it has a strong influence on plant growth and possesses an exclusive combination of properties, which are very promising for practical use. The application of BS in agriculture and horticulture is based on the ability of BS to increase crop yield and to stimulate physiological processes in plants. As a result, it may become feasible to grow crops under unfavorable conditions, such as a high salinity, drought, or insufficient nutrients. BS possess some specific features which are of a great potential value for their practical application: BS are natural products and widespread in the plant kingdom; plants respond to very small doses of BS (5–50 mg/ha), comparable with their natural content; and BS increase plant resistance against phytopathogens and can be used as substitutes for some traditional pesticides. BS can be applied for the treatment of plants or seeds using existing equipment and technologies. The influence of BS on the development and crop yield of different agricultural plants; such as cereals, legumes, vegetables, fruits, and others, has been tested in laboratory and field conditions. For large-scale field application, two modes of BS treatment are possible: soaking seeds and foliar spray.
