Abstract
This chapter covers thermal energy storage (TES) techniques as a category of mechanical energy storage (MES) methods. In this category of MES, thermal energy (either heat or cold) is stored via the use of a storage medium for a shorter or longer term. TES techniques are categorized into three classes: sensible TES (STES), latent TES (LTES), and thermo-chemical TES (TCTES). In terms of duration of storage, TES systems are classified into short-term and long-term systems. This chapter provides an overview of these techniques as well as mathematical models for each. It also discusses seasonal TES (SeTES), which can be based on either STES or LTES techniques.
