Abstract

General relations are shown for the spatial motion of charged particles in electromagnetic fields. Particle trajectories are described as functions of the masses and kinetic energies of particles as well as the modifications of these descriptions for relativistically fast particles. The Lagrange equations and Hamilton’s variational principle are discussed for the description of general particle motions and the notion of a refractive index for electromagnetic fields is introduced and discussed.
