Abstract

Effects on beams of charged particles are described when they move through fringe-fields. To determine these trajectories, the existence of Maxwell’s equations is most important, which relate derivatives in perpendicular directions. The positions of effective field boundaries are described for magnetic and for electric sector and quadrupole fields. The shapes of fringe-field shunts are sketched, and the importance of their existence is discussed.
