Abstract

Microgrids and virtual power plants display substantial significance due to their ability to mitigate global climate change while accounting for economic feasibility and reliability implications. However, these systems are ambiguously presented in the available literature when considering points of departure for different objectives. This chapter presents microgrids and virtual power plants with renewable energy resources through a conceptual framework. The approach taken in this study deals with examining various interrelated concepts of these modern energy systems in terms of performance, operation, equipment, and technology (POET). The POET framework has been primarily used for research on energy efficiency and control systems. However, the POET perspective displays significant suitability for achieving the objective of this chapter by clearly defining the reviewed concepts in a unified classification approach.
