Abstract

This chapter describes functions. The concept of a function has been developed as a means of organizing and assisting in the study of relationships. As graphs are powerful means of exhibiting relationships, it begins with a study of the Cartesian or rectangular coordinate system. It then defines a function and provides a number of ways of viewing the function concept. Function notation is introduced to provide a convenient means of writing functions. The chapter discusses some special types of functional relationships, such as increasing and decreasing functions. Variation can be viewed as a functional relationship. It develops an analogous way to handle points in a plane.
