Abstract

This chapter presents material on matrices and determinants that serves as an introduction to linear algebra, a mathematical subject that is used in the natural sciences, business and economics, and the social sciences. The study of matrices and determinants focuses on their application to the problem of solving systems of linear equations. It is shown that the method of Gaussian elimination can be neatly implemented using matrices. It is shown that matrix notation provides a convenient means for writing linear systems and that the inverse of a matrix enables one to solve such a system. Determinants provides with an additional technique, known as Cramer's rule, for the solution of certain linear systems.
