Abstract

The search for relationships or correspondence is a central activity in the attempts to understand the universe; it is used in mathematics, engineering, the physical and biological sciences, the social sciences, and business and economics. The concept of a function has been developed as a means of organizing and assisting in the study of relationships. Graphs are a powerful means of exhibiting relationships. This chapter presents a study of the Cartesian or rectangular coordinate system. It defines a function and presents a number of ways of viewing the function concept. It also explores some special types of functional relationships—increasing and decreasing functions—and explains how variation can be viewed as a functional relationship.
