Abstract

This chapter begins by describing the various types of fire pumps available in the marketplace. These include the standard centrifugal pump, positive displacement pumps, axial flow pumps, rotary pumps, gear pumps, etc. It then explains important features such as pump/impeller design relationships, single and multistage arrangements, standard fire pump characteristic, and the standard fire pump performance curve. Various applications of fire pumps are mentioned such as main and standby pumps, booster pumps, water mist fire pumps, jockey pumps, firewater circulation pumps, foam pumps, packaged units, and portable pumps. Mobile fire department fire pump support is addressed. A discussion of NFPA 20 and API requirements is provided. Where modifications occur in the firewater pumping system, the need for a Management of Change evaluation is described.
