Abstract

This chapter addresses the drivers provided for fire pumps—electric motors and diesel engines. The critical features of each are mentioned. For electrical motors, these include the power supply arrangements for reliability and NEMA classification of the motor. For the diesel engine, this includes the instrument gage panel, fuel arrangements, starting arrangements, cooling system, exhaust, air supplies, and ventilation. The use of steam turbine drivers is also described. Power transmission mechanism utilized are explained which include couplings, right angle gear drives and indirect hydraulic drives. The features of these options are compared.
