Abstract

This chapter discusses the role, usage, and troubleshooting techniques for power supply circuits. Most of the electronic systems require a source of stable DC voltage. Yet many systems get their input power from the standard 120-VAC power line. Even battery-powered units may require stable DC voltages at levels other than those provided directly by the battery. This chapter describes the basic role played by a voltage regulator circuit and details where it fits in the power distribution scheme. It discusses three basic classes of voltage regulator circuits. These are series regulation, shunt regulation, and switching regulation. Various figures and tables are used for better illustration of these regulators. The chapter also provides information on switching voltage regulators. Over current protection and over voltage protection are also considered here. Finally, the chapter concludes by providing a few troubleshooting tips for power supply circuits. Power supply circuits are considered by some technicians and engineers to be simple, fundamental, non-glamorous, and even boring. However, the troubleshooting of a defective supply is not always a simple task. This section helps to get a solution for the same.
