Abstract

Point-based graphics bear a huge potential for future research and development and might influence the way computer graphics will be performing in the future. This chapter reflects a significant part of research and experience of point based graphics as a whole. Although, it assumes familiarity with the standard computer graphics techniques for surface representation, modeling, and rendering, it provides a comprehensive study of the topic. It gives a brief background in traditional (polygon-based) computer graphics, and explains solutions to solve fundamental computer graphics problems, such as, surface data acquisition, representation, processing, modeling, and rendering.
