Abstract

Manufacture of microcellular plastic foams has attracted much attention from industry, owing to its numerous excellent advantages such as light-weight, better mechanical performance, and good appearance of finished products. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) foaming is considered a green process for the manufacture of many types of polymer foams. Radiation cross-linking can be applied to assist the scCO2 foaming of polyethylene and polypropylene, since the enhanced melt strength by cross-linking is favorable for the stabilization of cells. Radiation cross-linking is especially useful for the scCO2 foaming of polypropylene, because the foaming temperature window of neat polypropylene is only 4°C.
