Abstract

This chapter discusses the types of heat exchangers commonly used in upstream oil and gas equipment, such as shell-and-tube, double-pipe, plate-and-frame, and plate-and-fin models, as well as direct and indirect heaters, aerial coolers, and cooling towers. It then considers basic concepts related to sizing and selecting heat exchangers. It ends by providing guidelines for selecting a heat exchanger. A detailed heat exchanger design example is also provided in order to illustrate how to select and design a shell-and-tube and in-line heat exchanger.
