Abstract
BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) is a carbon-negative technology that combines sustainable bioenergy conversion with CO2 capture and storage (CCS). It is one of the more prospective large-scale carbon removal technologies. This chapter highlights a comprehensive analysis of BECCS technology including classification of bioenergies (biofuels, biomass, and third-generation biofuel), different conversion techniques, and production processes. CO2 capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) in the case of BECCS systems have been illustrated. Key components of the bioenergy supply chains are then presented, along with an inclusive overview and classification of the existing contributions on biofuel/bioenergy supply chain optimization. In addition, this chapter proposes the worldwide BECCS projects, research strategies, and incentives as well. Finally, in the context of BECCS, an outlook is given on recent developments in techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment of bioenergy and CCUS technologies.
