Abstract
Material handling starts from receiving raw materials in food processing till dispatch of finished value-added food products. Conveying systems have a significant role in food processing industries. This chapter deals with the scope and importance of solid and semi-solid material handling systems followed by the classification of the material related to material handling. Engineering properties related to material handling and conveying are discussed to understand the bulk material properties. The principles of material handling and conveyors, viz., planning, systems, space utilization, safety, standardization, flexibility, maintenance, control, and capacity, are also covered. The classification of various conveyors used in food processing industries is discussed. The estimation of capacities of the belt, bucket, and screw conveyors is covered with practical examples.
