Abstract

Formation of the disturbed surface layer on wrought sheets begins during hot and then cold rolling. Its thickness is of the order of a micrometre. The properties and composition of the sheets can be profoundly modified, and therefore are very different from the underlying metal.•Optical properties: its reflectance is much lower than that of the base alloy.•Corrosion resistance: this layer is electrochemically active and is more susceptible to filiform corrosion than the underlying, unmodified metal.•Performance during and after surface treatments and adhesion of coatings.
