Abstract

In this chapter, the attire worn by healthcare security staff and the equipment that may be carried by the security officer is shown to establish the image of the protection program and, if properly aligned with risk and organizational culture, can generate a positive perception of personal safety for those who work in or visit the healthcare facility. The assigned responsibilities of, and type of attire worn by, security officers will determine how the security officer will be equipped, and the advantages and disadvantages of various uniform styles is examined. The decision and trend to arm officers with firearms is examined in detail as well as other types of security equipment such as Tasers, chemical agents, batons and handcuffs, along with protective vests and other equipment such as personal protective equipment (PPE), protective vests and body cameras, all considered alongside use of force requirements.
