Abstract

Drug delivery through the mucosal membranes has been exploited to overcome the disadvantages associated with more popular routes such as oral and intravenous. Rectal drug delivery, by virtue of high permeability, direct access to blood stream, lower risk of overdose, and possibility of achieving local treatment, has become a route of choice for treating several rectal as well as systemic diseases. Various formulation approaches have been investigated for the formulation of rectal dosage forms. Immediate or controlled delivery of the drug from a dosage form can be achieved by proper selection of excipients. Polymers are the excipients that play a key role in modifying drug release and absorption. This chapter presents extensive review of the polymers used in developing different types of rectal dosage forms.
