Abstract
Inflammation is the body's protective response to invasion, injury and other challenges to homeostasis. Acute inflammation rapidly occurs anywhere needed in the body to accomplish this mission rapidly and then subsides. Chronic inflammation occurs when the mission is not accomplished. Inflammation is accompanied by free radical production and increased oxidative stress. Chronic inflammation produces a state of continual free radical production and ongoing oxidative stress which leads to disease onset. Sources of chronic inflammation include aging, persistent infection and chronic non-infectious disease, examples being cancer, type 2 diabetes, asthma, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, liver cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease, obesity, nonhealing wounds and chronic trauma.
