Abstract
Continuous quality improvement and total quality management initiatives have had positive impacts on healthcare outcomes and underlie patient safety and well-being. Quality approaches continue to be integrated across health systems, subspecialty disciplines, and programs. Current healthcare costs are not sustainable, and we are moving toward healthcare coverage and regulations that incentivize and reward quality over quantity. In addition, to stay resilient and be competitive in today’s market, healthcare systems and hospitals have to evolve and adapt to attract patients, insurers, and managed care organizations. Quality and safety targets and metrics need to be relevant, specific, and meaningful to stakeholders, including patients, referring physicians, and administrators.
