Abstract
This chapter focuses on the issues related to the development of embedded platforms for assisted living. Actual trends in providing healthcare for older people include the transfer of services from clinics and hospitals to people's homes. Measuring vital signals, initiating interaction between patient and doctor, monitoring and verifying patient condition can be integrated with embedded systems implementing other functionalities. The advent of reach featured embedded systems combined with new intelligent sensors opened innovative directions in remote diagnostic and treatment, survey and patient continuous monitoring in different surroundings and situations with real time processing of information and rapid intervention. The approach presented in this chapter describes how home automation and health monitoring systems can be integrated to include apart their specific functions, common support for elderly and disabled people with special attention for those living alone. The chapter describes different implementations of embedded systems used in assisted living applications.
