Abstract

A basic description of the mountain landscape in the Guiana Shield leads to the recognition of Pantepui as a distinct biogeographic entity. A historical review of the discovery and study of the butterflies in the montane zones of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana within the tepuis region produced a checklist of its endemic butterfly taxa and data on their known distribution. The considerable number of unique butterfly genera, species, and subspecies allows us to designate an area of endemism, the basic unit for the classification system established by the International Code of Area Nomenclature (ICAN). From this point of view, the group of butterflies studied herein is considered important for the definition of the Pantepui province in the Amazonian subregion of the Neotropics.
