Abstract

Large-scale movement of waters in the ocean basins is termed as Ocean circulation. Winds lead to surface circulation, whereas the cooling and sinking of waters in the Polar Regions drive deep circulation. Surface circulation carries the warm upper waters poleward from the tropics. Interaction between the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean through the Arctic Ocean helps modulate the global Ocean circulation. The Transpolar Drift Stream and the Beaufort Gyre (which is getting weakened due to a reduction in sea ice cover) are the two main wind-driven circulation features of the Arctic Ocean. In this chapter, an attempt is made to highlight the multifaceted dimensions of Arctic Ocean circulation.
