Abstract
AKH is an octapeptide with N-terminal pyroGlu and C-terminal amidation. AKH mobilizes stored carbohydrates and lipids from the fat body for extra loading into the hemolymph to satisfy required energy demands such as for migratory long flights in insects. Thus, AKH is thought to be functionally related to the vertebrate glucagon. A structurally related peptide, red pigment concentrating hormone (RPCH), has been identified as a factor controlling the crustacean body color by modulating the pigment chromatophore.
